El Columpio
My grandfather’s house had this swing outside I would often sit at with my family members. This swing is an integral part of my childhood and ultimately inspired me to make my own apartment swing.
Flatbush Shade Structure
Areas in Little Caribbean, BK suffer from high urban heat vulnerability. The form was inspired by the historic old growth oak and hickory forest that used to be on this land before Dutch agricultural systems. The bead work is an ode to the various immigrant cultures of the inhabitants of the land: various Caribbean, West African, and Lenape cultures.
Community members place “beads” on the trees and take them off on the colder months of the winter. The beaded structure would provide not only shade, but a community connection to ritual.
